About this tool

A closer look at Unlock PDF

Unlock PDF removes password protection from a PDF when you have the correct password, producing an unprotected copy. Decryption runs entirely in your browser.

Use it to reopen a PDF you protected but no longer need locked, to edit or merge a file you have the password for, or to recover access to your own document. The original encrypted file is left untouched on your device.

Most PDFs encrypted with standard passwords unlock cleanly. Some rare encryption variants from specific PDF applications may not be supported by the browser-side library. Only use this on documents you are authorized to access.

What you can use it for

  • Re-opening a PDF you protected but no longer need locked.
  • Editing a PDF you have the password for.
  • Recovering access to your own document.
  • Preparing an unlocked copy to merge or OCR.

What to keep in mind

  • Only works when the correct password is provided.
  • Some PDF readers' encryption variants may not be supported by the browser library.
  • Use responsibly: only unlock documents you are authorized to access.

Troubleshooting

  • 'Enter password' is rejected for a known password

The file may use an encryption variant the browser library does not support. Try your password carefully, or use a desktop PDF application.

  • The unlocked file looks different

Decryption only removes the encryption; content is identical. If a tool changes display, check the reader's settings rather than the file itself.
